About

Formed in 2001, the Philadelphia Film Society (PFS) is a renowned arts and cultural organization that values film as a distinctive form of artistic expression and an important reflection of cultural, social, and economic diversity. It is the Philadelphia Film Society’s mission to promote film as a powerful means for strengthening community education, understanding, and engagement. PFS achieves its mission through a variety of year-round cinematic events, including the annual Philadelphia Film Festival, innovative film screenings, and two screenwriting courses.

The pinnacle of the PFS annual programming is the Philadelphia Film Festival. PFS celebrated the 20th Anniversary of Festival from October 20 – November 3, 2011. The need for an annual premier film festival in Philadelphia is clear: with only 14 movie screens in Center City Philadelphia, there is an unfortunate lack of opportunity to view important films in a city that is otherwise known for theater, music and art. As PFS’ annual centerpiece event, the Festival makes a major contribution to the cultural milieu of the city, offering more than a hundred opportunities to view films that unite, inspire and educate Philadelphia audiences.

It is only through the support of our year-round members, donors, volunteers, board members, and sponsors that we can sustain and ensure the continued success of both the organization and our programming, including the annual Philadelphia Film Festival. In addition to thanking each and every member of the Philadelphia Film Society, we would like to recognize the following organizations for their incredible support:

  • Haas Foundation Trusts
  • City of Philadelphia & Department of Commerce
  • Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development
